British Fashion Awards 2011. Review.

Now I'm back to Oslo from London. And though all newspapers and blogers have already told about this ceremony, I chose to wait a bit in order to give inside information on the event.

On Monday 28th of November me and my girls got all dressed up, heeled up and arrived to Savoy Theater. Fortunatelly we had good seats and separate entrance, so we didn't have to stay in a long queue.

We were followed up to our seats, got goodiebags and a glass of champagne and just chilled out a bit checking out other ladies outfits. And trust me, it was a lot to pay attention to! Beautiful evening designer gowns, marvelous cocktail dresses, gorgeous pumps and so many different styles! It's like the whole London fashion industry put on their best and enjoyed showing off! :) Very nice!

The ceremony itself was pretty short. It took just 1 hour to give away all the prizes.
Hosted by presents George Lamb and Lauren Laverne, the ceremony saw the best of the British and international fashion industries joined by a glamorous line-up of guests and presenters, including BFC Ambassador Samantha Cameron, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Colin Firth, Olivia Palermo, Josephine de la Baume, Marc Jacobs, Lady Amanda Harlech and Alexa Chung.

Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen is the winner of The British Fashion Awards esteemed ‘Designer of the Year’ award 2011. Burton’s creative direction at Alexander McQueen has allowed McQueen’s legacy to live on while still giving her own twist of creative genius to a collection that has outshone its rivals on and off the catwalk.

The ‘New Establishment Award’ was introduced this year to recognise a particular movement in British fashion that is taking the industry by storm. The inaugural winner is Christopher Kane whose visionary designs for his own label continue to lead trends globally, become must haves for any fashion credible shoot and essentials for all fashion collectors.

The ‘Red Carpet ’ award went to many celebrities favourite this year, Stella McCartney, recognising the quantity and quality of her designs worn on the red carpet, creating global awareness in the media.

It was funny how Kate Hudson presented Stella. When Kate was only 21 y.o. and was nominated for one of the Hollywood awards, Stella offered her to make a dress for the Red Carpet back then. After that ceremony Kate woke up the next morning with a terrible hangover and decided to check the press. To her horror she found out that her dress was one of the worst ones. She immediatelly called Stella and got the following answer from her: 'Don't worry, babe! I think it was your hair!' :)))) So they laught and since then bacame a good friends. Video is here

Victoria Beckham was the recipient of the ‘Designer Brand’ award. Her business has focused growth strategy with each new product range receiving media praise and achieving high levels of sell through. She is her own customer and this insight has created a label with many loyal followers across the globe.

It was cool to see her in real life, because she is completelly different from her pics. When she got up on the stage and Marc Jacobs gave her her prize, she was so overwhelmed, thanked her parents who were there and her family, her team and all the fans. Seems like a standard thing to do, but she did it with an honest feeling of gratitude. Real woman with real emotions. You can see the video of her here

Marc Jacobs is so stylish! Met him and Stella on the way to the smoking corner outside the Savoy hotel.

Stella Tennant collected the ‘Model’ award, her timeless beauty has seen her feature in numerous shows, covers, editorials and major campaigns which this year included Zara, Reed Krakoff, Etro, Chanel and Celine.

The hotly contested ‘Accessory Designer of the Year’ recipient was Charlotte Dellal for her footwear label Charlotte Olympia which is inspired by the glamour of the 40s and 50s. Super hot and stylish diva! Video is here

The Savoy Hotel is gorgeous! Stylish english luxury in all its glory. The dinner was delightfull and the service was on top!

Next year London will be the host fpr OL 2012 and BFA 2012 ceremony is promised to be more exciting then this year! Oooh, I'm going to be there then! :)

Rosemount and Costume Awards design competition 2012.

I LOVE design competitions! Simply love them!

This time the Australian wine house Rosemount and norwegian fashion magazine Costume cooperate for a design project to find the best dress inspired by Rosemount wine bottle and their wines, of course.

They have organized this contest already twice and this January 2012 they are going to celebrate a new design talent during the Costume Fashion Awards.

unique opportunity for young designers to make contacts and gain valuable industry experience.

Plus media coverage, but I think the most exciting is actually a chance to work with Filippa K team and gain the nesseccary fashion experience.

I, of course, made a couple of dresses and sent them to Rosemount. So I cross my fingers! :)

No matter who wins, the best part for me is taking actually part in the process.

British Fashion Awards 2011!

It really feels like forever since I've wrote something here!.. Too much to do at ESMOD besides my own business. Tailoring classes take all my energy. But it's totally worth it as Rakel, our tutor is a super proff! :)

Anyway, I'm very excited now as I was invited to British Fashion Awards 2011 Ceremony in London at the end of November and it's just awesome! I'm really looking forward to get some inspiration from this trip, to see London, all its vintage markets; the biggest art fair which is going to be there as we are; to get to know new people, make some usefull connections, but mostly important is to be a part of this great fashion ceremony! It starts at Savoy Restaurant following by the ceremony at the Savoy Theatre and after party.

This year nominees are:

Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane and Erdem in the category Designer of the Year.

In the category Emerging Talent Award /Ready-to-Wear/ these talented people are nominated:

J.W. Anderson, Mary Katrantzou and Peter Pilotto. I personally vote for Mary Katrantzou for her amasing work with prints. I think she is one of the best print proffs these days in fashion industry. Have a look:

Mary's design signatures are: “A hyperrealist aesthetic, bold graphics and industrial jewellery."

She was awarded NEWGEN sponsorship for six seasons (spring/summer 2009 - autumn/winter 2011).

And of course Designer Brand of the year with the following nominees:

Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartny and Tom Ford.

Jøss! It's been a month since I wrote my last note here. The whole month at school with a lot of homework (!), drawing, clipping, glueing, Adobe programs, sewing, OMG!

But now it's time to give some new info on our brand.

As I mentioned before, we had a photoshoot with Charlotte Thorstvedt as a model wearing some cool clothing from different clothing brands.

I suggested my Barbara skirt suit from my s/s 2010 and it looked really good on Charlotte!

Summer is over and I'm back to school.

We all were pleasantly surprised to see that we got bigger class rooms, some extra materials, goodie bags even (!) when we got back to ESMOD after our summer break.

They also made some interior changes which are both nice and inspiring as these actually some students work hanging on the walls now.

I'm totally ready for this new year at school with all new fashion competitions from Truimph and Jean Paul, St. Catherine costume party, etc.

Russian Fashion Week and me.

As the expreience grows, your potential and goals grow too.

Full of energy and new ideas after the presenting my 1st collection and finding some buyers for it, I wanted to continue creating and working on my clothing line.

My next move was to show the new collection (by that time) a/w 2010 on some popular fashion week in order to attract both PR and media attention and hopefully some buyers.

Buyers are damn important in this business! You can create whatever you like and say that you own a clothing brand, but it's actually important to SELL as well.

So I thought why not Russian Fashion Week - the biggest and the most media covered fashion week in the Eastern Europe.

I must say I didn't regret doint it at all! The RFW's team (now Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia) was super proffs! All designers got the possibility to show there collections on World Fashion Channel sent directly from the runway. 'Must-have' interview for the same channel right after the runway, a lot of other interviews for the main fashion magazines and blogers.

Russian people are in love with fashion and are always updated about last news in fashion world. So I had like 500-600 ppl as audience when I had my show there.

Plus I was invited to the TV-show to style a Russian celebrity for her 7 days wardrobe choice.

Backstage was totally extreme! But this is actually my favorite part of any runway show - backstage. It's a huge support monster for any designer and people working there are some modern heroes :)

Thinking about taking a break? No way! World Fashion Channel is waiting!

Anyway, the RFW experience was awesome! And that day I had - wow!!! - fitting, runway rehearsal in the morning, TV-show filming for 5 hours and straight to my own runway show, just 30 min before it started! Great day! But I would never manage thought it without the support and help from my family and friends! So THANK YOU guys for being there for me!

Passion for fashion?

EASY!

First time is always the most exciting and everybody is nervious as hell. It's like a first date.

My personal first fashion date was at the Oslo Fashion Fair (OFF) in August 2009 where I presented my first collection of dresses inspired by Hollywood beautiful actresses of 50' and 60'.

The whole thing was at the Old Chocolate Factory which was pretty cool: industrial interior, djs, some international brands, runway shows and New Norwegian designers corner.

The main idea for OFF was to attract as many buyers as possible so we, designers, could sell them our products.

Unfortunatelly there were almost none of those buyers there and we just went around and check each others clothing lines.

90% of models didn't know how to walk the runway. They were also not of the sizes we had our clothes so they could show them on the catwalk.

But who cares, you know? Especially now.

Fun and pretty valueable experience for me and good understanding of what ectually happens in the fashion industry in Norway.

Zero commercial.

The OFF afterparty was fun though.

Made some very good connections, drank lots of champagne and enjoyed the evening with my friends.

Working in fashion industry, living and breathing by it, I always notice some fabulous styling looks on people on the street. Some of us manage to put together a knock-out-outfit, some of us don't know how...

Me and my friend met one of those who don't know how.

This lady went along the street with her skirt stuck in her waist on her back.

Before I could say anything, a couple of frames were taken.

But the most 'wonderful' was that when I told the lady that her skirt was high up on the sky, I got the following answer:

'No worries! It's totally ok. I DO HAVE MY TIGHTS ON, you know!'

Speechless.

PS: remember though that we judge a person by his/her deeds, not clothes.

Have been to several hairdressers without the result I really wanted to get.

Real people and real talent...

Those who know me well know for sure that I’m not that kind of person who chases celebrities just because they are famous. I’m not one of those who are interested in a person just because she or he was in a paper or a magazine without knowing WHAT actually this person does. I do appreciate to meet and get to know new and really interesting people, the people I can learn something from.

Last Friday I was lucky to meet two of them at ones. I was asked to help at the backstage of Ricco Vero and Kristian Aadnevik for Ricco Vero runway show and I surely said yes to that. Unfortunately OFW doesn’t provide us with some international design talents so often, so you get to take any chance if you want to see how people work in design area abroad. 

As some of you know I’ve had a couple of runway shows of my own internationally and I’ve seen the high level of work on those fashion weeks. Kristian and the Riccovero team coordinated and followed the whole runway process highly professionally. All the models looked like one, the makeup team did a superb job and everyone, hopefully, was happy with the result. 

When entering the Ballroom where the show was, I noticed at one once a huge screen above the catwalk with a stunning model showing beautiful dresses by Kristian Aadnevik. I would definitely buy 2-3 of them at once! That beauty on the screen happened to be a popular fashion model Anna Ilinska. She appeared on the numerous amount of fashion magazines, went runway for the biggest names in the fashion and now she is a cover face for Kristian Aadnevik for the last two seasons and looks like she is his muse.

All that I found out after the party when I got home. While I was there we started charting first with Anna and then with Kristian. And this is probably why I’ve written such a long article this time: let’s say it’s been a long time since I met such nice people with no ‘super star’ attitude, not snobs at all, but talented, hardworking and charming. With their success they are still amazingly friendly and I’d say a bit shy even.

Kristian with his talent and beautiful creations worn by Nicole and Beyonce among others, Anna and her youthful beauty and success – are the perfect examples that you can still be friendly human beings and role models for us. Achieve the goals you stand for instead of concentrating on some reality show ‘stars’ and local celebrity crowd. Talent and hardwork are the best elements for success, you know.

Oslo Fashion Week 8th-12th of August.

Oslo Fashion Week (OFW) is coming next week. Will be exciting to see the new collection by Kristian Aadnevik for Riccovero. Their last collaboration was very nice I must say!

I am also going there to see a new s/s 2012 collection of my co-student and friend Sjur Østlien Lien and Stian Tjernsmo for LEASH. Moods of Norway are going to have a great show as usual for sure :)
Who else?.. Armando Santos is always interesting and unique in his own way, so his show is deff worth seeing. Hopefully Cocoon will present something really modern unique and wearable. I have seen what KHIO and HIO students do and I must say, I am impressed. For some fun and colors you have to go to Fam's show, of course. Generally I hope we are going to engoy this OFW season better then the last one.

MASSIV summer party at Bar Vulkan.

Last Friday it was a huge party fro MASSIVE life style magazine here in Oslo. the party was held at the Bar Vulkan and I met a lot of new people there together with my pal JLB. Every time we hit any party, people take pictures of us:) So sometimes when my friends look at the pics, they wonder if I've got myself a second husband:)))

The atmosphere was very friendly there. People moved around, taloking to each other, gossiping and making new friends. A lot of wine and cocktails, photoes, dancing - in short a good organized summer party!

Would be rude to forget to mention how full our VIP goodiebags were! Thanks to the sponsors we got Ole Henrikson products, LANZA, some energizing drink to blow your brain, and ohhhh! The cockies from Sebastian! I'm a greedy guzzler! :) I eat those colourfull preciouse things all the time: at work, at school and parties. GORGEOUSE little creatures they are! :)

Last time I wrote about what you have to have in your mind before starting your company - the idea. After you have decided what you are going to do, you MUST have your market analysis done. It takes time and nerves and good brain, of course :) if you don't want to do it yourself, do hire a specialist who actually has a knowledge about doing a market analysis. OR! you can always talk to some students who study marketing to help you. OR! Do it yourself :)Make a questionnaire with all the necessary questions about where you see your company on the market, what group of people/customers you aim for, what product you want to produce/sell, etc. Answering all these questions you'll get the understanding on what price range your products will be, so you can easily find out how much you have to spend to start your firm.

Retail and fashion market analysis seeks to identify market trends in local and regional retail sectors using detailed demographic and retail sales data on local communities. Its goal is to provide relevant information and analysis that can be used as input into economic development strategies for local communities.

The market analysis of a retail includes research on statistics on the retail industry:

Analyze retail sales by sector and type of outlet
Identify the leading retailers by sector
Assess developments in retail infrastructure and alternative selling channels
Get coverage of sectors including: food, health and beauty, clothing and footwear, durable goods, household goods, furniture, leisure goods

I meet new people all the time: either through my work, school or anywhere else. Almost 99% of them ask me why and how I started my own clothing brand. At first I was patient enough and took my time to tell them about it. But later on I found myself feeling like a broken CD telling the same story every time. So I thought I could share it here in my blog with those who are interested in knowing how actually you start from zero and make your business work. It's hard. Very hard. And you have to prepare yourself and your family that this is going to be a couple of crazy years with no sleep, hard work and money problem as everything you have and earn in this prosess is going to be invested in development of your company.

The most important is the IDEA. You have to realize clearly WHAT you want to do, with what money, how much you need and what people you need for your team. Beacuse you CANNOT just do all the work by yourself! So take a good deep breath and make a market analysis.

This is the first and one of the most important steps in any business. Start with it.

Hallo all you fashionable people! ESMOD 1st year students have party tonight at 18.00. There'll be grilling in Sofienberg park and TOMORROW the 3rd year will have their graduation show with total of 30 collections 6-10 pcs each. You can still buy tickets for the show which is going to be at the Sentrum scene. Price is 150 NOK. It's going to be just awesome! :)

As for me I had a relaxing and wonderful day. Delived my samples to miinto.no crew, so they could take some sales pictures of them. I'm now working on production of the a/w 2011-12 collection with gorgeous wool coats and dresses and additionally I'm designing and producing silk and cashemire scarves with totally crazy yet beautiful prints! :) so I'm very excited to get them in my online miinto.no store VERY soon!

Today we were supposed to have a photoshoot at Ekeberg restaurant, but our model got sick... And as usualyl exactly today the weather is finally sunny! The whole week it was shitty as hell, but today when the model is sick and there's no chance to find another one, the sun is here!.. Damn! Not blaming anybody, everything can happen and I do understand it. It's just damn annoying!..

Next week I'm have a simple sale oriented photoshoot with miinto.no guys. And yes, I've started working with miinto.no and soon you can buy my clothing line there.

The clearnce is over and as I mentioned before it was a big success. We are planning to do it again soon enough, probably in September or right before Christmas. For now I've got some new business deals from a couple of buyers and the offer from Oslo Fashion Week to participate in a group runway show for Norwegian designers in August. So I have to think it through. We'll see...

For a couple of days ago I was asked to loan some of my dresses for a photoshoot with pretty Charlotte Thorstvedt. The photographer Rolf-Ørjan Høgset is amasing I must say! Charlotte was very sweet and stylish in Barbare suit which was perfect on her! So I'm very excited to see the pictures Rolf has taken and want to thank the whole crew and Charlotte for a wonderful day :)

I'm thinking it could be smart to get myself a blog about my very own brand NADIA SVENSSON. Have never done it before as a blog, but it's never late to learn. Me and my team thought what we can do to make this blog work and to attract more readers?.. Hmm... would be not that exciting to just follow fashion news worldwide when you can read them on f.ex. www.style.com, right? Probably a bit boring to just take a pic of one of our team members and give a list of what she or he is wearing today to describe the whole look - we are not www.streetstyle.com and don't wanna steal teir idea, tough we do love them!
So we thought since we have such a great possibility working with a fashion brand like NADIA SVENSSON, we should go for a daily description of what we do here. We do have it pretty exciting every day with our PR, showroom, fashion trades, fashion weeks, factories, production and a lot more! And as the designer is still at school, we can give you some inside look of the ESMODE fashion school daily. Sounds like fun?:)

We can start right from the beginning, we thought. Our first collection 'Bright Sophistication' was made in retro style. Classy design and bright colors with a modern tough. The collection was a success especially abroad.
